Good to Be Square

As we excitedly look forward to crafting with toilet paper core at this Saturday's KBCC session, here is an interesting eco idea.

When Shigeru Ban came up with this design, it makes it just a little harder to be wasteful with toilet paper because a tug is met with resistance. This is one part of the eco 3R strategies - reduce.

For this Saturday's KBCC, the regular round ones will do.

KBCC #09 - Rolling X'mas Party!

Synopsis:
Teacher EeWei will be showing us how to recycle plain rolls into beautiful work of art. Inspired by Yuken Teruya. Of course, not to forget our X'mas Cards Exchange! We've all decided to each make at least 1 ATC (Artist Trading Cards of size 2.5x3.5inches) on X'mas theme, which we will then trade among ourselves @KBCC.
So pls remember to bring rolls, scissors & cutters, completed X'mas ATC(s).
Registration: S$10.00/participant

KBCC #08: Drink Can Fun!

It was a cosy & relaxed afternoon @Pauseability last Saturday. Michelle & Isabelle came in  a little late, but just in time before we made too much progress in our drink can weaving project. 

After some squeaking, twisting, twitching, coiling... Wala! Check out our drink-can-bloom!

Then we decided to arrange them into a sculpture... Then came the idea of using them as our X'mas decoration for December's KBCC! Details as follows:

BOOMARANG

Last Saturday had a late lunch with a couple of friends and acquaintances at a bistro called Boomarang. Yes, boomarang... not boomerang but boomArang. Located at Robertson Quay, the first thing i noticed about the place was the decor hanging above us.



Apparantly, these are rolls and twigs that have been recycled and incorporated into the venue's layout and decor. I just thought it was a neat idea to recycle what you have and use it as decor... neat! :)

Oh, their all day breakfast was yummilicious!

Christmas Decor from Recycled Materials

I found this Christmas decor at Tanglin Mall where they decorated the christmas tree, pillars all by recycled materials, mainly pet bottles
The middle three pictures are a sculpture of reindeer made of .. some plastic i guess. Interestingly, the plastic gives the sculpture very shiny colors ... also the bottle picture, the entire pillar is made of bottles and despite of its dull transparent colors, the bottles reflect the sunlight n produce rainbow colors instead !!!

the fourth photo is a chandelier-kind-of-deco which reminds me of this artist called Miwa Koizumi

She basically created jellyfish from pet bottles
really wanna try it out but i think it requires certain bending technique and also special tools right ? hahaha
but yeah, do check her out, she's one of my fav artist

Eco Mobile

Hey, we are on a roll here!

Quite by coincidence, I had just recently made this mobile from the core of kitchen rolls. It is decorated with origami butterflies made from old magazine pages.

This is of course no where near the masterly work of Yuken but still an attempt all the same. And very eco-crafty.

I like the way this balances and sways very gently in a light breeze. Almost hypnotic to watch.

Yuken Teruya's Everyday Objects

Wow... first contributor! :) After Betsy shared with us in the last ATC (#15) session about setting up this blog with a focus on Eco-friendly art and craft projects, i happened to chance upon this website through my daily blog readings.

Yuken Teruya uses everyday objects (from toilet rolls, newspapers and even storybooks) to create refreshing, lovely intricate works of art. His works have been feature in the bi-annual Singapore Biennale back in 2006 too!


The photo you see here is one of many Yuken's featured projects titled Corner Forest. I really really love how he transformed a simple plain toilet roll into a delicate pretty piece of art! This is something that would be the talking point of a room if you have such a decor on your wall.
